My name is Deanna Johnston, and creativity has always been part of who I am. Before Salty Chickadees, my business was called Chickadees Crafts Co., where for many years I poured my heart into creating and selling gift baskets, quilts, handmade jewelry, custom aprons, painted pieces, leatherwork, and more. If it could be made by hand, chances are I was making it.

My journey took a beautiful turn when my younger daughter, Hayle, who has a disability, needed to be at home and needed purpose. Out of that need, she created her own business called Salty Apparel, designing T-shirts and sweatshirts—with me right alongside her, helping and creating together. As both of our businesses grew, it felt natural to merge them into one, and Salty Chickadees was born.

The word Salty holds deep meaning for us. It comes from Matthew 5:13–14—to be the salt and the light. That verse reflects our mission: to bring light, love, and purpose into everything we create.

As Salty Chickadees has grown, it has truly become a family business. My oldest daughter, Sarah, plays a huge role—she built our website, models for the brand, and helps manage so many behind-the-scenes details. My grandkids proudly serve as our models and media stars, adding even more joy and personality to the brand.

Salty Chickadees is more than a creative business—it’s a celebration of individuality, beauty, faith, and joy. For over 10 years, I’ve been crafting with love, and for the past 2 years, I’ve poured that passion into building Salty Chickadees into a space where creativity meets connection. Every item is designed or carefully sourced to help people feel special, seen, and beautiful—whatever that looks like for them. From bold statement pieces to subtle everyday charm, each creation is meant to spark confidence, spread love, and remind us that beauty comes in many forms.
